TEMAS DE INVESTIGACION:

El principal interés en investigación en nuestro laboratorio ha estado relacionado con el estudio de los mecanismos fisiopatológicos de algunos protozoarios parásitos importantes en la salud pública de México. En la amibiasis producida por Entamoeba histolytica nos hemos enfocado en el estudio de la respuesta inmune humoral y celular y en los cambios celulares que ocurren durante la interacción huésped-parásito tanto a nivel intestinal como hepático; usando modelos animales susceptibles y resistentes. Actualmente estamos analizando el papel de las lectinas amibianas, citocinas y óxido nítrico durante la evolución de las lesiones producidas por E. histolytica. De la misma manera estamos evaluando las respuestas inmunes inespecíficas o innatas y específicas en la amibiasis con el fin de inducir protección contra la infección.

Otra de nuestras líneas de investigación es el estudio de las  amibas de vida libre: Naegleria fowleri y Acanthamoeba spp. Estas amibas causan varias enfermedades en humanos, las cuales incluyen meningoencefalitis amibiana primaria, encefalitis granulomatosa, queratitis amibiana (daño en la córnea), infecciones de oído y pulmón, entre otras. En nuestro laboratorio se ha establecido un modelo in vivo que nos permitió evaluar la patogenia de la queratitis amibiana y  la meningoencefalitis amibiana primaria.

En los protozoarios parásitos mencionados anteriormente, analizamos por diversas metodologías modernas los mecanismos involucrados en los fenómenos de daño.  También es de nuestro interés conocer el papel de las respuestas innatas y específicas que participan en estas enfermedades.

RESEARCH INTEREST:

The main interest in our laboratory has been focussed on the mechanisms of pathogenesis of some parasitic infections of public health problem in Mexico. The amebiasis is an infectious disease produced by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. One of the interest has been the study of humoral and cellular immune responses (natural and specific immunities) and the cell changes produced during the host-parasite interaction in the intestine and the amoebic liver abscess development. Using in vivo animal models of susceptibility and resistance to the disease, we are currently analysing the role of several lectins and other molecules (cytokines, nitric oxide, oxidative stress, etc.) during the evolution of the lesions produced by E. histolytica. Moreover, our studies on the innate and specific immune responses have been related with the induction of protection against the infection.

Another important research line has been related with Free Living Amoebae, especially Naegleria fowleri and Acanthamoeba spp. These amoebae produce diverse types of human diseases, including the Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis, Granulomatous encephalitis and Amoebic Keratitis (damage in the cornea).In our laboratory we have established in vivo animal models to determine the pathogenesis of the Amoebic Keratitis and the Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis. In these studies we are currently using different and new methodologies that facilitate our understanding of the mechanisms of tissue invasion and damage. Our interest has been also focussed on the role of the innate and specific responses that are involved in these infections.
